NABET 25 Unionized Employees, WKBW-TV General Manager BILL RANSOM has laid off.
NABET/CWA is in negotiations with Granite Broadcasting. We came to the table with 11 pages of ideas to make for a better working environment. We were presenting the core issues that need to be worked on at WKBW-TV Channel 7. Granite came to the table with 75 pages of rip your heart out, mean spirited, evil ideas that border on cruel and unusual. The NABET employees of WKBW-TV Channel 7 really want to get back to putting on good quality television. We don't have time for these games. The attitude of Granite has made us feel unappreciated and down right angry. We want to know how would it make you feel?
How would you feel if you were ready to leave for vacation and your boss called the night before and said it was cancelled and maybe they will pay you to change your plans?
That’s what Granite wants.
How would you feel if you worked long hours all week trying to do a good job and finish your work properly, but come Friday your Boss sends you home early so you don’t get any over time?
That’s what Granite wants.
How would you feel if came into work today and you have a different job function with the company. Whether or not you want to do it or really know how to do it you have to do it?
That’s what Granite wants.
How would you feel if today your doctor told you the illness you have been battling for 6 months is gone and you go to tell your Boss, but he tells you, you don’t have a job any more? They terminated your employment while you were trying to get better.
That’s what Granite wants.
How would you feel if during a new job or promotion interview the Boss tells you that split shifts come with the position? You need to work, so you say yes, and for as long as you work there they can make you work a few hours in the morning and then come back in the afternoon messing up your whole day.
That’s what Granite wants. What we want is what most people want! A decent working environment and the tools and abilities to do our job properly.
We are well-educated experienced professionals.
Despite the way we are treated we still have enormous pride and strive to bring the public quality television. Television that matters to you, and information that is clear and concise so that we aren’t wasting your time.
We hate the mistakes and problems that are hitting Channel 7’s air waves, and we notice many more that the average viewer may not see. The mistakes are a result of inept managers who don’t know how to do their job properly and so they focus on micro managing the experienced people who know what they are doing. We have years and years of broadcast experience and knowledge that never get used.
These are just some of the problems we are facing at the negotiation table. We haven’t even talked about $$$ yet. FYI the starting hourly wage at Channel 7 is barely above minimum, $8.75. That doesn’t even meet Buffalo City Hall’s designation of a living wage at $9.90 per hour. The most on our pay scale is about $18 and hour. We don’t make a lot of money, but we like what we do. We enjoy informing and entertaining you.
We hate asking you to turn off Channel 7 and to stop shopping at those who advertising on Channel 7, but we are. It will take you “The Public” to get our message of disgust and distain to Granite Broadcasting. Tell them to settle the contract and do it now. Soon, you can get back to watching good, quality, informative television. Thank You for reading this, check back for updates soon.
This is the beginning of the end. WKBW-TV used to stand for something.
(“Well Known Bible Witness”, then
“We Know Buffalo’s Wants”)We all know that the name is the same, but this is not your father’s WKBW-TV.
